Pots and Electric Kiln

Glassblowing

Reheating an Ennion Jug
This was a seven-day firing, running from the 27th August to the 2nd September, 2022, and was devoted to glassblowing.

We lit the furnace at around 07.15 and charged the pots between 08.45 and 09.30, when the furnace temperature reached 1000°C. We blew glass from about 10.00 until 13.00, broke for lunch, worked from 14.00 until about 19.00 (but with a tea break!), usually finishing at 19.30, after emptying the pots. This meant that total blowing time each day was about eight hours hours (except on the final day, when we stopped blowing at 17.30, and finished at 18.00).

This was the first time that our electric kiln was used to keep the pots warm overnight.

Our guest glassblower was Jeanne Goutheraud from France; here to gain experience of working at a wood-fired furnace.
