Glassblowing

This was a seven-day firing, running from the 10th to the 16th January, 2022. On the first day, we fired the furnace to 1000°C over four hours to dry it out. The rest of the week was devoted to glassblowing.

As the day lengths were short, we lit the furnace at around 07.30 and charged the pots at about 10.00, when the furnace temperature reached 1000°C. We blew glass from about 10.30 until 13.00, broke for lunch, worked from 14.00 until about 16.30, usually finishing at 17.00, after emptying the pots. This meant that total blowing time each day was about five hours.

Two American glassblowers visited us for this firing: Jason Klein and Leslie Pierce, and several of the photos in the 'Glassblowing' section show them working at the furnace.

We also ran a couple of experimental melts for a research student (which showed us that the furnace could cope with small melts alongside normal glassblowing - photos in 'Glassblowing').
