| The Firepit We sited this furnace in the corner of the workshop, after taking into account the re-siting of the lehr. There would be just enough space to fit three working holes in the furnace, but the working hole on the left, nearest the lehr, would be the only one at which we could blow glass. We used a cardboard model of the furnace made by David to decide on the final position and orientation. The final size of the firng pit was to be 17" in diameter by 9" deep, with a 9"-wide by 12"-long stoke hole, so we had to dig a hole several inches deeper and wider than these measurements. Our construction method was similar to that used at our 2005 and 2006 furnaces: using daub to 'cement' the Roman tile fragments, but we re-used some old mullite slabs for the firepit floor alongside the Roman tile fragments. On reflection, we probably made the firepit too deep. No more than six inches deep would have been enough. Before we positioned the inner wall on the firepit, we made sure that the top surface was level. | | |
