Furnace Performance and Lehr

Pots, Collars and Breakages

Glassblowing

Chasing 1300°C

This was an eleven-day firing, running from the 16th to the 26th June, 2021, with the furnace raised to the highest temperature we could manage on Day Eleven, and was the last firing before the rebuild. As with Firing Five, the weather was variable.

We followed a similar régime to that of Firing Five: lighting the furnace around 07.30, pot charging at about 10.30 (when the furnace temperature reached 1000°C), blowing glass for close to seven hours (with lunch and dinner breaks) and finally emptying the pots and clearing up at the end of the day.

We mainly undertook production work, but we also had several postgraduate students visiting and stoking for a few days. We also had two audio engineers recording 'sounds of wood-fired furnace glassblowing' for a short video on the sounds of 16th century London!

The removal of this furnace is recorded in the section on the 2021 Firings.
