This shape, known as a diota, occurs in both the eastern and western halves of the Roman Empire. Some of the western examples tend to be intricately made, some elaborately decorated (a large example from Cologne has raised, dark blue prunts), suggesting that some may have been intended as ornaments as well as having practical uses. Our reproductions are of western originals.
