These long-necked vessels for scented oils, ointments or medicines were common throughout the Roman Empire, especially in eastern Mediterranean lands such as Syria and Palestine. A large series of these vessels was found in Cyprus, and the Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto, Canada houses a good representative collection. Although many phials have been found in the western provinces (including Britain), our reproductions are mainly based upon the Cypriot examples.
