Roman Furnace Project 2005: Construction Phase

Introduction ('Home')   Construction Phase   General Photographs   Daub-making Photographs

Pot Furnace Photographs   Tank Furnace Photographs   Annealing Oven Photographs

We made the daub from water, powdered clay, sand and grit, and chopped hay in roughly equal proportions by volume, mixed it by hand in two plastic half-barrels, then spread out on a large wooden board in front of the furnace to evaporate some of the water.

It was then either bagged up for use in building the furnaces or used to make the furnace 'furniture' (collars, stoppers, bricks, etc.)

1. 1.25 tonnes of powdered clay. 2. Some of the sand and grit.
3. Shredding the hay using a garden shredder. 4. Mixing the clay with water.
5. Adding the sand. 6. Adding the grit.
7. Mixing in the sand and grit. 8. Adding the chopped hay.
9. Spreading out a tubful of daub to evaporate some of the water. 10. Some of the furnace 'furniture'.

"If you build it, they will come."
