Roman Furnace Project 2006: The Barbecue

Introduction ('Home')    The Barbecue    Woodpile and Ash Pits    Photographs of Pots

Photographs of Glass Waste    Photographs of Glass Vessels    Photographs of Final Weathering

With the excess tiles and daub, we built a barbecue which could use hot ashes and charcoal. The 2005 project barbecue had been used a great deal, so this one was a better-built structure. The stokers (particularly the night stokers) were able to cook a wide range of food using both the barbecue and the hot ash pits. This is a sensible use of waste heat, and could easily have been employed by glassworkers from the Roman period.
